Our community was founded by Mother Agnes Mason more than a century ago. We are a teaching order and once the most scholarly one in the Church of England, Greek was required and Hebrew encouraged for the Profession so we could tutor in the Lambeth Degree we helped start so women could have degrees in theology. We were also part of the Oxford Movement, Baron Hugel, etc., creating an openness between Catholicism and Anglicanism! The Community of the Holy Family was dreamed up in an olive tree in Florence and started in Red Lion Square of the Pre-Raphaalites by Mother Agnes Mason. We taught in India at Naini Tal, the Mother Foundress' brother teaching in South Africa, ordaining Black priests at Umtata's Bede College, in the tradition that would continue with Trevor Hudleston and Desmond Tutu against apartheid.
Unfortunately, in 2010, our order, with lack of membership, fell apart, but we are proud to report that we exist again. A group of Episcopalian woman revived an unofficial order based on Episcopal and former Community principles! Resurrected like our Lord!
Our new order is dedicated to adult education, ecumenicalism, acceptance, and rebirth! ALL WOMEN, straight, gay, purple, no exceptions are welcome here.
